Get Involved

  • Volunteer

The New Canaan Historical Society is an organization of volunteers; as we continue to grow, we need your help. Hours are flexible.

We have fascinating and enjoyable opportunities in widely varied areas: museum interpretation; teaching; crafts; historical, genealogical or costume research; archival assistance; social events and many other interests.

    Educational Programs

Our School Program on Early American Life provides enlightening presentations for school groups to see and experience what life was like for children in the Colonial era. If you love history and enjoy working with school-age children, this is a wonderful volunteer opportunity.

The program provides tours for school children of all ages. Classes are divided into four groups, with each group spending 30 minutes in the Tool Museum, the Rock School and the Hanford-Silliman House’s Colonial kitchen and craft room.

In the Rock School, our volunteers give early 19th-century lessons; they make presentations about Colonial life around the hearth in the Colonial kitchen, and give spinning and weaving demonstrations in the craft room; and in the Tool Museum, they demonstrate historical farming techniques. We have volunteer opportunities in all four areas, for men and women.

Presentations last 30 minutes and are given four times each tour. Volunteers choose their interest area, and the Historical Society provides the scripts for a short training session along with a wealth of background information.

    Museum Docents

Our Museum Docents combine a love of history with a passion for sharing their knowledge with others. We provide the training, and our docents lead tours of the Hanford-Silliman House, the Tool Museum, Rock School and the Rogers Studio and Museum.  Our museums are open to the public by appointment.

    Library Volunteers

If you love history, solving mysteries, enjoy organizing records, working alone or with a friend, then join the dedicated volunteers in our research library.
