The St. Michael’s Lutheran Church is the oldest church building in New Canaan. Constructed in 1833, it was consecrated on May 6, 1834 as the second site of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. The slab of granite out front was the horse block from the 1733 Canaan Parish meeting house.

The congregation grew and, in 1857, decided to remodel the church. The church today reflects this expansion, which included the addition of the tall steeple, a redone entrance, and the circular window openings.

The exceptional stain glass windows are filled with Christian iconography. The one over the Baptismal font was designed by Silvermine artist D. Putnam Brinley.

In 1961, St. Mark’s moved to its current location on Oenoke Ridge, taking several of the glass windows with it. The Lutheran church purchased the property, and, in 1963, St. Michael’s was formally organized as a congregation of the Lutheran Church of America.

The Museum purchased the church property in 2025.

The Museum is closed
