The Art of Portraiture: A Look Through Time

Share

Thursday, April 11th, 11:00 am

The New Canaan Museum and Historical Society welcomes ArtScapades with a lecture that ties in with their current portrait exhibition, Portraits of New Canaan.

ArtScapades will look at the history of portraiture in art. From ancient times to today, portraiture has told us fundamental truths, whoever the subject. By looking at who was portrayed, and how, we are able to gain insights into social, cultural, and political history that no other type of painting can offer.

This lecture will include a look at works by Jan van Eyck, Rembrandt, Thomas Gainsborough, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Vincent van Gogh, James McNeill Whistler, Pablo Picasso, and Marsden Hartley, and more.

We are excited to announce that construction on the Jim and Dede Bartlett Center for New Canaan History is underway! Events will occur as scheduled, but because of the logistical challenges in the main building, the portrait exhibition is available by appointment only. Please contact ngeary@nchistory.org.

WE WILL BE CLOSED FOR RESEARCH UNTIL June 4th.
